Here is the thing about heat: it makes things move. When the heater turns on, the materials expand. When it cools down, they shrink. If you’re using a cheap seal, those constant shifts create tiny, invisible cracks. Once that happens, the shower steam finds a way in. It seeps through those gaps and creates a path for electricity to go where it shouldn’t. I see this all the time with the “budget” heaters. Doing it the right way
To stop those shorts, we have to stop thinking about “plugging a hole” and start thinking about a mechanical bond. We use industrial-grade stuff—high-temp vulcanized silicone or specific epoxy resins. The trick is picking a material that expands and contracts at the same rate as the heater. They move together, so they don’t pull apart. If that seal isn’t airtight, the heat basically bakes the wire insulation until it turns brittle and flakes off like old paint. Once you have bare wire sitting in a humid bathroom? It’s only a matter of time before it arcs.
A quick warning on airflow
Now, there is a catch. A tight, heavy-duty seal is great for safety, but it can act like a heat sink. It traps heat right at the connection point. If you take a perfectly sealed unit and cram it into a tiny enclosure with zero breathing room, you’re just trading one problem for another. You might end up melting your external wiring because the heat has nowhere to go. Give the thing some air. It’s the only way to make sure the whole system actually lasts.
