Why We Build Our Pergola Heaters to be Fixed, Not Tossed
Outdoor heaters have a tough life. They deal with freezing rain, humidity, and wild temperature swings every single day. Most companies build these as sealed boxes. That’s fine for a while, but then you hit the “Year 5” wall. A heating element burns out, and because everything is welded or glued shut, you can’t just fix it. You have to rip the whole fixture out of the ceiling and throw it in a dumpster. That feels wrong to us. So, we did things differently. The “Swap and Go” Approach We look at the infrared heating element as something that’s meant to wear out—like a lightbulb. Instead of a permanent installation, we use a modular chassis. If a tube dies, you don’t need to spend hours rewiring the whole housing. You just pull the old one out and drop a new one in. It takes minutes. We use standard connectors and locking brackets, too. That means your technician doesn’t have to spend an hour fiddling with the alignment to get it just right. It just clicks into place. Dealing with Water and Heat Here’s the tricky part: usually, if you make something waterproof, it traps heat. If you make it breathe, water gets in. To get around this, we used silicone gaskets and heat-resistant seals to keep the electrical guts completely separate from the heat zone. Then, we hit the whole chassis with a powder coat so the rain and humidity don’t eat through the metal. And because these tubes get incredibly hot, they expand. If they’re held too tightly, they snap. We use “floating mounts” that give the tubes a bit of room to breathe as they heat up and cool down. The Honest Trade-off I’ll be straight with you—this design isn’t invisible. Because we use quick-connect sockets instead of thin wires, the housing is a bit bulkier. It takes up a little more space than a hard-wired unit. But think about the alternative. Would you rather have a slightly larger heater, or a system that becomes expensive e-waste the second one filament snaps? If you’re running a busy commercial patio, the choice is easy. You save a fortune on labor and headaches in the long run.
