
Stopping the Chill in Locker Rooms
Let’s be honest: heating a changing room or a locker area is usually a nightmare. You’ve got those massive ceilings and constant drafts from doors swinging open. If you try to use a standard forced-air system, you’re basically paying to heat a giant cube of empty air. It’s a waste of money. That’s why we just go around the air entirely. We use infrared radiant heaters mounted on the ceiling. Instead of fighting the drafts, these units send heat straight to the people and the objects in the room. How it actually works Think of it like the sun. You don’t feel the air around you get hot when you step outside on a winter day—you feel the warmth hitting your skin. When we wire these into a ceiling grid, the heat travels in a straight shot. It hits the floor and the people standing on it. It’s almost instant. You aren’t standing there shivering while you wait for a vent to kick in; you feel the warmth the second you walk in. Getting the setup right We usually go with short-wave or medium-wave emitters. Short-wave is the way to go if you want that “instant on” feeling. But here’s the trick: you have to get the wattage and the height just right. If you mount them too low, you get these annoying “hot spots” where someone feels like they’re standing too close to a campfire. It’s uncomfortable. We mount them higher and spread them out so the whole room feels like it’s wrapped in a warm blanket. The reality of the install We design these to drop right into the ceiling so you aren’t dealing with days of construction. But a heads-up on the power: these things pull a lot of juice. You’ve got to make sure your electrical panel can handle the load without overheating. And remember, since we aren’t heating the air, “line of sight” is everything. If someone steps behind a big locker or a wall, they’re going to feel the chill again. We spend a lot of time mapping out the room’s layout to make sure there are no cold gaps. It’s all about the placement.
